Served Soft Opening

Opening Reception of Served Soft a group show featuring works of Melanie Anne Paulos and Xan Violet. Doors open at 8pm. Gallery Hours after the opening are tbd.

Melanie Paulos' work is a wolf in sheep's clothing, hidden intention in action, and above all is the Trojan Horse that lies between femme experience and forward movement in mobility.

Xan Violet - "I’m god’s favorite kid. Sometimes I wear monochromatic pink outfits, but I saw a girl on the M train doing that and I didn’t like the way it looked on her, so I don’t do it as often. When I make, I will not assist others in lying to themselves, and I intend not to lie to myself. I allow people to imagine, experience, and theorize about different worlds. I fabricate alternative ways to experience emotions like grief, mania, and joy."

Aint No Party: An installation by Candice Greathouse

An opening reception for Ain’t No Party is set for 7 –10 pm Saturday, January 6, 2018 at the Eyedrum Art and Music Gallery. An artist talk will be held at 2 pm Sunday, January 14. The exhibition will remain on view through Saturday, February 3. Gallery hours are during events and by appointment. Click here for more info.

Ain’t No Party, an installation by Candice Greathouse, creates an atmospheric party environment anchored in personal and collective experience. Fascinated by the preparation, anticipation, and decoration of common events such as birthday parties, grade school dances, and holiday gatherings, the artist conceptually reimagines these experiences and channels the “magic of the moment” outside of its original context.

Disguises Welcomed Here: a collaborative residency

Disguises Welcomed Here: a collaborative residency

"Disguises Welcomed Here: a collaborative residency" by Meredith Kooi, Johnnie Ray Kornegay III, and Ajmal 'Mas Man' Millar transforms Eyedrum's gallery 88 into a quasi-domestic dwelling for the artists and audience to explore their own stories, memories, and personas together. Using masks and costumes, video, photography, and sound, the group dredges up the past to look at it anew.

Throughout the residency, the group invites the public into their space to join them for dinner, portrait and storytelling workshop sessions, and dancing. During these events, the group encourages attendees to dive into their own histories and share what they discover, adding to the installation. The public will also be able to get a virtual glimpse of the artists' own discoveries with each other through internet radio and live video streams.

At the end of the residency, "Disguises Welcomed Here" will have two days of Open Houses so that audience members who participated can see themselves in the installation and new audience members can witness the accumulation of memories and stories.

December 10, 6-8pm: Sunday Family Dinner - Bring a dish from your family / culture!
December 11 - 14, by appointment: Portrait & Storytelling Sessions
December 16, 6-9pm: Dancing Together
December 17 - 18, 12-5pm: Open House
